There are a lot of bad vegan cheeses out there, and they’re not cheap, so it can be discouraging to try a new one. We’ve tried quite a few, and find that some work better than others depending how you use them.

Daiya: Once upon a time, Daiya was the only option. Times have changed! Best melted. We use the daiya slices to make grilled cheese.

Nafsikas Feta: perfect for salads

Nafsikas Parmesan: excellent sprinkled on chilli, Pasta, salads, etc

Nafsikas Poutine Cheese: best for…you guessed it — Poutine!

Gusta original: this moist cheese is great for sandwiches or grated on pizza, or nachos. You can find it in most grocery stores, but it’s much cheaper if you go to the Gusta headquarters in Jean Talon Market.

Field Roast Chao: Delicious on sandwiches and melts better than the Daiya slices!

Nuts for Cheese: With the holidays coming up, cheese platters are always a favourite, and these soft cheeses are perfect and come in a variety of flavours.

OR…Try your hand at some of these simple vegan cheese recipes you can make yourself with basic ingredients you might already have:

Parmesan: Mix 1/2 cup roast cashews, 2 tbsp nutritional yeast and 2 tsp garlic salt — Voilà!
Easy cheese sauce: 1 tbsp oil, 1 tbsp flour, 1 cup plant milk (soy, cashew), 2 tsp nutritional yeast, Dash garlic, salt and cayenne
Veggie cheese sauce (nacho cheese anyone?) You’ll need 2 potatoes, 1 carrot, 2 tbsp nutritional yeast, 2 tbsp olive oil, half lemons juice, garlic salt, paprika — you can add jalapeño / cayenne / roasted red pepper to kick it up a notch!
Basic firm cheese: 1 cup plant milk (soy, cashew) 1 cup cooked sweet potato, 1/2 tsp paprika, 1/2 tsp cumin, 1 tsp salt, 1 tbsp soy sauce, 2 tsp garlic powder or 2 cloves, 1/2 lemon juice, 2 tbsp nutritional yeast, 1 cup water and 2 1/2 tbsp agar agar (found in most health food stores!) ♡

These are exciting times for vegans with many options that can be found at your local grocery store. With interest in veganism spiking this year, and more than 40% of Canadians willing to reduce their meat and dairy consumption, we should expect even more plant-based companies sprouting and even more vegan options for us to enjoy.

What are your favourite vegan cheeses?
